These relics are buried like easter eggs into the environment and are carefully rendered to feel aged and ominous.  I believe it is these kinds of details that help immerse the audience by setting a tone for the rest of the story.  I spend a great deal of time thinking about “setting the stage” and which decisions would lead to the best representation of a feeling I want the audience to experience.
